Soweto sightseeingKahawa Soweto is a small slum placed in the Northern-East outskirts of Nairobi, in Kenya, part of Githurai district and Kiambu county, bordering the housing complex of Kongo. It’s just located on a little hill and built in a slight slope to allow sewage to drain from each house into the downstream open-air sewage system. On top of the hill, there is the main road where there are the main buildings, shops, and bars. As soon as you leave the main road, many secondary streets branch off, leading you to houses and to drinkable water wells. The shacks are built with different materials, most of which are recycled, and are generally owned by the people who live in them, but the land belongs to the State. Almost every house has an electricity supply. Waste collection is completely self-managed by the people who live there and many times it is disposed of by burning it.
